Fundamental

The CANSail Fundamental Course is a pre-requisite for all CANSail instructors including 1/2 instructors and Community instructors, covering key coaching concepts and on-land practice. This course allows instructors to reflect, collaborate, and build on their existing knowledge, while preparing them for further CANSail Instructor Training.  Min Age: 15 (14-year-olds may be accepted if they complete the Community Instructor Course to become an Instructor in Training). Age is based on December 31 of the clinic year.

This course designed for new sailing instructors and bundles key prerequisites—Coach Boat Safety, Wet Feet Module, and the CANSail 1/2 Technical Clinic—into a single registration. Community Instructor Clinic

For community leaders and volunteers that do not have the required skill level or time to become a CANSail 1&2 instructor, but are interested in becoming involved and want to support entry-level sailors and developing foundational coaching skills.

Ages 14-16:

  • Successful Outcome: Instructor-in-Training.
  • Note: At this age, participants are too young to teach alone, cannot certify sailors, and are only allowed to assist certified instructors. The minimum sailing level required is CANSail 4.

Ages 16 and Over:

  • Successful Outcome 1: iCANSail Level – If the instructor has not completed the CANSail Fundamental Course, they can certify at the iCANSail Level. Minimum sailing level required is CANSail 2.
  • Successful Outcome 2: CANSail 1 – If the instructor has completed the CANSail Fundamental Course, they can certify both iCANSail and CANSail 1 Levels. Minimum sailing level required is CANSail 2.

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age: 16 years
  • Must be able to sail up to CANSail 2 or CANSail 4
  • First Aid Certification
  • Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)
  • Making Ethical Decisions Module & Evaluation
